Thank you for one of the most honest and informative sites I have seen. GMSD's are new to me, long ago my father had a kennel, and we had Dobies and Rotts. After doing the "dirty work" of the kennels for a long time, I did not want the responsibility of dogs, at least not for 10 years. Then Sweetness (a drop off/abandon) Rott came into my life. A better dog I had never seen. We had almost three years with her, she passed about a week ago. Sad? You lose a family member, its beyond words. But time heals. (it better!). Your loss with Axel must have left you in the same state as we are going thru... The GSMD seems so simiular to Rotts, after a bit of time, we could not do better than what I have read about a GSMD. Again, thank you for your openness, and honesty. Dave

I have just recently been researching the Swiss Mtn Dogs, and am considering adopting one in the next year. This website is fantastic! There is so much information here, which made us think very hard about whether this breed is right for our family. Your story of Axel and his video made us cry. It is definitely the epilepsy that makes us hesitant, but if we decide to go forward at least we are informed about this disorder.

Thank you!

p.s. we think what you are doing for Visa is great. It sounds like you have sacrificed a lot for her, and it's wonderful that you only want her to have the best life for her.

To Mary Smith (are you always this anonymous? how about a real name?)

Not that it's any of your business, but I have made the very difficult decision to place Visa because she frankly does not do well in a pack. When she was so sick last year and suffered cerebral edema in the ICU, she experienced some mild brain damage. Nothing that would prevent her from being a perfectly happy family companion, however my other Swissies sense that she is just different and have ostracized her. If she tries to join in their play, they pick on her. And she just doesn't pick up on their cues all that well either. You might want to read up on pack animal dynamics in your spare time. In the wild, Visa is the dog who would be run off by the rest of the pack because the others sense that she is just not quite right. I cannot separate her from the others as my dogs all live in the house. In addition, living in a pack that she has a hard time fitting into can be a little stressful for her and trigger her to go off her water again. So it is for Visa's best interest that I have made the decision to place her in a companion home.

She is a big, beautiful bitch and the easiest Swissy I've ever put a championship on, earning 14 of her 15 points in just one week. She is my only Moxie daughter, and it tears me up to part with her. Many other breeders would extract their pound of flesh (for the nearly $10K invested in her to get her to this point), simply keep her in a kennel and breed the hell out of her. So if you want to judge me for putting her well-being ahead of my own interest, you go right ahead.

But if you're actually interested in an adult Swissy, check out the breeders.net website. I'm sure you can find plenty of adult Swissies in need of a home.

So are you always this hypocritical?

"When my Swissies are retired from the show ring or whelping box, they continue to live with me -- I value them ALL equally as my friends and companions. My love of dogs and interest in this breed is driven by passion, not profit. That has always been the case, and always will be."

So if that is the case, why are you getting rid of Visa? Just doesn't seem right to me! Probably not to her either!

Kristen, I met you through Lori and I too had the unfortunate experience of epilepsy with Benson. You and I had conversations pertaining to Bensons epilepsy, so sorry for your loss.

Leo is a sister to Mia and he is a wonderful, energetic, slow maturing puppy!

Hope to see you sometime! Congrats to a wonderful year in the show ring! Best to you for the New Year! Cheers to Lori from me and Leo.

We have a new Swissy companion and are eager to enjoy our lives together. In educating myself about swissies I came across your website...it's terrific! Thank you for all the work you put into it and making it available.

Kristin, So enjoy your site and was so sorry to read about Axel's passing. The video was wonderful. I know what you are going through having lost a very much-loved dog myself. There is a saying that goes something like this: "With every dog I lose, a piece of my heart goes with him. With each new dog, I am given a piece of his heart. Pretty soon my heart will be all dog and I will be the better person because of it." Please know our thoughts are with you.

I am just starting to learn and fall in love with this breed and reading about Axel has given me pause. I am sorry for your loss, would you do it differently though, if you knew ahead of time? Probably not. I am a HS teacher who recently lossed one of my special students and at her wake I said to those gathered that the temptation would be to insulate yourself and try and love a little less but then you would miss out on meeting and loving the ones so full of life. As a total stranger I apologize if I have intruded on something personal but your experience reminded me of my student.

Such a beautiful, sweet boy, and such a tragedy to hear of his loss. You were blessed and enriched to have had him in your life, as he was, to have shared his life with you, Kristin. I am so sorry for your loss and your sadness. Mary Ann Geary

Just wanted you to know I was thinking about you today (as I have everyday since Axel passed). Reading about him and seeing his pictures will never get old! What a wonderful life he had, but what a terrible thing he went through. I have definitely learned this breed can and will break your heart at some point. How is it that Swissies are so addicting?
