Breeder...or Anti-Breeder

For some time now, there has been a concerted effort by many Greater Swiss Mountain Dog breeders to discredit the contributions of many individuals, most of whom are working hard and dedicated to the preservation of this breed, by calling those individuals "anti-breeder".  As someone relatively new to this breed, but having 30 plus years breeding and showing in another, I was stunned to hear people, many of whom are Greater Swiss Mountain Dog breeders themselves, referred to as "anti-breeder."  There is a big difference between a Swissy fancier who breeds occasionally (maybe once a year or so), with thoughtful consideration, research and preparation, and a member of PETA.

This kind of "anti-breeder" vitriol usually comes from the animal rights activists who would like to see our rights to own pets taken from us.  Therefore, it made me think long and hard about what I am.  As I prepared to breed my first litter of Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, I considered many of the issues that seem to divide the Breeders and Anti-Breeders.  These are just some of the tenets to which I adhere.

  1. I believe that a dog or bitch should have more going for it than testicles or a uterus to be considered breedable.  If that makes me anti-breeder, then so be it.
  2. I believe that breeders should be 100% truthful in disclosing OFA results, health issues and any closeted skeletons to potential puppy buyers.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  3. I believe you can have a quality breeding program with just a few dogs (notice I said quality, NOT QUANTITY).  In fact, it is easier to breed for quality when you are more selective about what you breed.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  4. I believe that it's the breeder's responsiblity to look out for the Breed, not the Breed Club's responsibility to promote the breeder.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  5. I believe that being a reputable breeder is about more than knowing c-section protocols and how to maximize puppy production.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  6. I believe that breeders should never unload their "dead wood" (dogs no longer of use for breeding) in a shelter...ever.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  7. I believe Puppies are more than "units of production."  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  8. I believe  “Code of Ethics” and "Breeders Guidelines" should not be synonymous with  “hate crime”.   If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  9. I believe anyone can put two dogs in the backyard, call themselves a “breeder” and put an ad on puppyfind. If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  10. I believe that raising the bar with regard to breeder guidelines, not catering to the lowest common denominator, is the key to any successful Breed Club and crucial to the protection of any Breed.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  11. I believe pet homes should never be coerced into taking a show puppy or breeding their dog, just so their breeder can claim more titles and profit off said puppy. If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  12. I believe the person responsible for training and putting titles on their dog is the one who deserves the credit and recognition. If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  13. I believe good mentorship is as much about discouraging the inexperienced  from breeding as it is about encouraging and supporting those who have gained the experience and a thorough understanding of the responsibilities involved. If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  14. I believe expecting puppies or breedings back in addition to  full  payment for a puppy is equivalent to charging  two to three times the purchase price. If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  15. I believe the "hobby breeder" (someone who breeds one or two litters a year) can be just as serious about their breeding endeavors and decisions as the breeder who derives a living from producing and selling puppies...if not more so.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  16. I believe that bitches shouldn't have to spend the best years of their lives pregnant or recovering from whelping/raising puppies all the time.  In other words, I believe bitches should not be bred on consecutive heat cycles after carrying, whelping and raising eight or more puppies, especially, God forbid, after having a c-section.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  17. I believe dogs with seizure disorders, AND THEIR OFFSPRING, should not be bred...under any circumstances.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  18. I believe that the needs of my Swissies as pets should be put ahead of my needs as a Breeder.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  19. I believe the BREED comes first, not the Breeder.  If that makes me anti-breeder, so be it.
  20. I believe it's worth knowing where your Breeder stands on these and other issues, and you should not be afraid to ask them.  If they think asking these questions makes you anti-breeder...find another breeder.

Being PRO-BREED does not make someone ANTI-BREEDER.
