DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA!
Evita is my girl from Pluck’s final “Broadway Showtunes” litter, sired by Cherished Swissies handsome Shep. Hers is a story of joy and resilience.
Evita had a challenging start, as a c-section baby who was slow to wake up. But through the amazing work of the repro vet techs, who are actually able to intubate these tiny neonates, Evita was ultimately revived and I knew she would be a fighter.
For the first two weeks, until her eyes and ears opened, it was almost like Evita was still asleep (although she did eat and move around fine). When I picked her up, I swear she was like a tri-colored bean bag, the only one in a litter of 9 like this and the first I’d experienced, but I wasn’t sure what that meant. Well after her eyes and ears opened, it was a complete 180 and she suddenly was hyper-stimulated by her surroundings and I knew her early oxygen deprivation had some effects. Yet she continued to grow and thrive, and I ultimately made the choice to hold onto this girl who was just “special” in many ways.
Although I made the decision not to show Evita, as I thought the show environment might be too much for this girl, she loves life and is the happiest of dogs otherwise. So happy in fact that she can’t stop spinning half the time!! Growing up, I could see the promise fulfilled I’d seen in that young puppy, as Evita turned into a tank with substance, a beautiful shoulder and front, and a fat incredibly strong rear you could drive a truck through. I hadn’t contemplated a breeding future for her until I did her health clearances, which she passed with flying colors.
I had to weigh whether or not Evita could find the inner calmness to be a good mother. I figured her best chance would be if she could free-whelp her puppies, as opposed to waking up to “what are these and where did they come from?” And I knew if it was too much for her, I’d wind up hand-raising a litter. Well as luck would have it, Evita required an emergency c-section. At first she showed no interest in her puppies but I gave it two days for the anesthesia to clear her system. And then, I was able to calm her, and one by one I put the puppies on to nurse. What happened next was amazing. The nervous energy drained from her body and it was like a zen-like trance overcame Evita. She immediately started licking and nuzzling her puppies and ultimately became one of the very best mothers I’ve ever had. Careful, loving and insanely devoted to her babies…it shocked me, seeing her transformed by the power of instinct and hormones.
Evita’s first litter, 5 handsome boys, were a true joy…incredibly consistent in every way imaginable, especially their wonderful temperaments and personalities. It’s clear that Evita survived for a reason, and through perseverance on her part and patience on mine, that all became very clear. Though her challenging start gave Evita some special quirks, her heart of gold, innate kindness and joy appear to breed true.
I can’t help but fantasize about what an Anchor x Evita litter could bring the world.
